Residents of Hawaldarpara in Nilphamari's Saidpur municipality staged a protest and human chain demanding road repairs. The protest was held on Chalhati Road in the city on Monday afternoon. They demanded the removal of municipal councilor Kazi Monowar Hossain Haider and mayor Rafika Akter Jahan.
During the protest, residents of Ward No. 10 of the municipal city, Mohammad Rashed, Haji Taslim, Mainul Hasan, Rawnak Siddiqui, Khalid Khan, Fafsal Didar Dipu, Taslima Muskan, Arif Mustafa Mithu, Anwar Hossain, and others spoke.
The speakers said that although Syedpur is a first-class municipality, there has been no development in the area due to the inefficiency and corruption of the municipal councilor Kazi Monowar Hossain Haider. The roads and alleys of Ward No. 10, the heart of the city, have become unfit for movement. No initiative is being taken for renovation. The drainage system is also fragile. Water accumulates up to the knees in a light rain. The locals suffer extreme suffering due to the lack of drainage system. However, crores of taka are being collected from the citizens every year in the name of various services including municipal tax, trade license, design approval, birth-death and inheritance certificates. The mayor and councilors are embezzling the income money instead of using it for development work. Strict programs will be imposed if initiatives are not taken to repair the roads as soon as possible.
Regarding the complaint, Municipal Councilor Kazi Monowar Hossain Haider said that development work in the area could not be done due to lack of allocation from the municipality. If allocation is received, initiatives will be taken to construct roads and drains. He claimed that his opponent is conspiring by issuing this issue to reduce his popularity.
In this regard, Mayor Rafika Akhter Jahan said, "A project has already been sent to ECNEC for road renovation. Road renovation work will begin as soon as the budget is received. In addition, the work of drain renovation and construction is continuing. This problem will also be resolved in phases."
