The death toll from the collapse of a bridge over the Macchu River in Gujarat continues to rise, with 140 deaths reported as of Monday morning.

The death toll is expected to rise. Many people were also injured when the suspension bridge collapsed.

It has been alleged that the green signal was not obtained from the administration before opening the bridge to the public. No 'fitness certificate' was obtained for the bridge.

Some are blaming this negligence by the authorities as one of the reasons it collapsed on Sunday evening.

The collapsed suspension bridge over the river in Morbi, Gujarat, was opened to the public a few days ago after being renovated. The disaster came six days after the bridge was reopened. About 500 people were standing on the narrow bridge on Sunday evening. A video circulating on the internet showed many people jumping on the bridge. Soon after, the bridge collapsed into the river.

The bridge was renovated by a private organization called 'Oreva'. The bridge was closed for seven months for renovation. It was reopened on October 26. Rescue operations were ongoing in the Macchu River throughout the night on Sunday. At least 200 people, including local residents and rescuers, have been involved in the rescue operation.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Gujarat on Sunday for a three-day visit. The Gujarat government has announced a compensation of Rs 4 lakh to the families of those killed in the incident.

The central government will provide compensation of two lakh taka each to the families of the deceased. In addition, the government will provide financial assistance of 50 thousand taka to the injured. The Prime Minister expressed grief over the bridge disaster.
