The death toll from a massive explosion at a coal mine in northern Turkey has risen to 28, officials say, with the search for many trapped miners continuing. The death toll is expected to rise significantly.

Turkish authorities said eight of the injured in the coal mine accident in the northern Bursa province of Amasra were being treated in intensive care, while five others were in an emergency response center set up in the area.

The sick workers are among the 28 miners who have been rescued and taken to hospital so far, Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu told reporters at the mine in Amasra, a district in Turkey's Black Sea province of Bartin.

He told reporters that at least three miners were in critical condition in the intensive care unit.

"In total, 110 of our brothers were working in the mine," Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu said. "Some of them came out on their own and a few were rescued." Energy Minister Fatih Donmez said initial investigations revealed that the explosion in the mine was caused by firedamp, an explosive mixture of flammable gases, or methane.
