দ্বন্দ্বের শুরু যেভাবে

ইরান ও ইসরায়েলের সম্পর্ক ১৯৭৯ সাল পর্যন্ত বেশ সৌহার্দ্যপূর্ণ ছিল। তবে আয়াতুল্লাহ রুহুল্লাহ খোমেনি ইসলামী বিপ্লবের মাধ্যমে দেশটির ক্ষমতায় আসার পর সম্পর্ক খারাপ হয়। শুরুর দিকে ফিলিস্তিনকে ভাগ করে ১৯৪৮ সালে ইসরায়েল রাষ্ট্র গঠনের বিরোধিতা করেছিল ইরান। কিন্তু মিসরের পর তেহরান আবার স্বীকৃতিও দেয়। সেই সময় মধ্যপ্রাচ্যে যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের অন্যতম প্রধান মিত্র ছিল ইরান।

১৯৭৯ সালে পরিস্থিতি পুরোপুরি বদলে যায়। খোমেনি বিপ্লবের মাধ্যমে ইসরায়েল ও পাশ্চাত্য সমর্থিত রাজবংশ উৎখাত করে ইরানে ইসলামী প্রজাতন্ত্র গঠন করেন।

এই নতুন সরকারের পরিচয়ের অন্যতম প্রধান বৈশিষ্ট্য ছিল যুক্তরাষ্ট্র ও তার মিত্র ইসরায়েলের সাম্রাজ্যবাদ প্রত্যাখ্যান করা। এরপর নতুন সরকার ইসরায়েলের সঙ্গে সম্পর্ক ছিন্ন করে, ইসরায়েলের নাগরিকদের পাসপোর্টের বৈধতা বাতিল ও তেহরানে ইসরায়েলি দূতাবাস দখল করে প্যালেস্টাইন লিবারেশন অর্গানাইজেশনের (পিএলও) কাছে হস্তান্তর করে। ওই সময় পিএলও ইসরায়েলি সরকারের বিরুদ্ধে লড়াই ও ফিলিস্তিন রাষ্ট্র প্রতিষ্ঠার সংগ্রামে নেতৃত্বে ছিল।
