The short film 'Below the Window', written by Dhaka-based screenwriter Nusrat Islam, has been selected for the Sony Future Filmmaker Awards.

The names of a total of 30 films selected in 6 categories were announced on the Sony Future Filmmaker Awards website on Wednesday. Among them, the Irish film has been nominated in the 'Student' category.

This year, 8,400 films from 5,000 filmmakers from 148 countries around the world were submitted for the award. From these, the judges selected the best 30 films.

Screenwriter Nusrat told Prothom Alo on Thursday night that she wrote the screenplay for the film in 2022 while studying for her master's degree at the National Film School in Dublin, the capital of Ireland. The film was produced by her university classmates in 2023.

The film is produced by Katniss Tung Cheng (Hong Kong) with the support of Erasmus and KinoEyes and directed by Mexican director Salvador Alejandro Gutierrez.

Nusrat returned to the country in 2023 after completing her postgraduate studies. She is now teaching at a private university in Dhaka.

The Sony Future Filmmaker Awards authorities said that the producers, directors, and screenwriters of the selected films will have the opportunity to participate in a workshop in Los Angeles, USA. However, Nusrat is unable to travel to the United States due to visa complications.

From the 30 films selected this year, the top six films will be awarded at a grand ceremony on May 30 at the iconic Sony Pictures Studios in Culver City, California.
