Kolkata Knight Riders scored 105 runs in the first 6 overs against Royal Challengers Bangalore in the 2017 IPL. This was the IPL record in the power play. Seven years later, Sunrisers Hyderabad broke not only that record but also the recognized T20 power play record. Hyderabad scored 125 runs without a wicket in the power play against Delhi Capitals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.

The previous world record was held by Nottinghamshire, who scored 106 runs in the first 6 overs against Durham in the 2017 NatWest T20 Blast.

Travis Head started the havoc by hitting Khalil Ahmed for a six in the second ball of the innings. 19 runs came in that over. 21 runs came in the second over bowled by Lalit Yadav. The Australian opener hit 2 sixes in that over. 22 runs came in the third over bowled by Anrich Norquier, 22 runs were scored by Head. The batsman, who had scored a century in the previous match, also got a fifty. Head reached this milestone by hitting 50 sixes in 16 balls.

In the next over bowled by Lalit, Head-Abhishek Sharma scored another 21 runs. In the next over, Kuldeep Yadav came on the attack and gave away 20 runs. Hyderabad reached 100 off the last ball of the over. The team became the first team in the history of IPL to score 100 runs in 5 overs. 22 runs came in the last over of the power play.

At the end of the power play, Head was unbeaten on 84 off 26 balls and Abhishek was unbeaten on 40 off 10 balls. Kuldeep broke the 131-run partnership by catching Abhishek (46 off 12 balls) off the second ball of the seventh over to Axar Patel. Aiden Markram was also out in the Axar-Kuldeep partnership on the last ball of that over (1 run from 3 balls). Kuldeep took another wicket on the last ball of the ninth over. This time, he was caught at long on and sent off Head (89 off 32 balls). Abhishek and Head both hit 6 sixes each.

Axar Patel took another wicket for Delhi Capitals off the next ball. He bowled Heinrich Klaasen. Hyderabad, who had scored 125 runs without a wicket, ended the innings at 162/4 with Klaasen's dismissal.

Hyderabad, who suddenly lost their edge, this time raised hopes of breaking the record of the highest team innings in IPL, but in the end, they stopped 21 runs short of it. In the end, another stormy innings from Shahbaz Ahmed helped Hyderabad score 266 runs for 7 wickets. Which is the fourth highest in IPL history. Shahbaz was unbeaten on 59 runs off 29 balls with 2 fours and 5 sixes.

Although they failed to break the team's record for the highest number of runs, Hyderabad has set a record for the most sixes in an innings in IPL. The team has hit a total of 22 sixes. Which is a joint record in IPL history. Hyderabad had hit 22 sixes against Royal Challengers Bangalore this year.
