Lakshmipur: Police have arrested Abul Kalam (35), the ex-husband of a divorced wife, in Kamalnagar, Lakshmipur, for cutting her hair, torturing her and gang-raping her with his friends.
He was arrested from Sonargaon, Narayanganj on Thursday (December 7) night. Abul Kalam is the son of Anwar Ali of Torabganj area.
On Friday (December 8) afternoon, Kamalnagar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC, Investigation) Md. Alamgir Hossain confirmed the arrest and said that he was arrested in a drive with the assistance of Sonargaon Police based on a secret tip-off.
On the evening of November 17, Abul Kalam and two others abducted his wife from Toramganj area of Kamalnagar and gang-raped her throughout the night. In the morning, they abandoned the woman on the side of the road and fled.
The woman's mother, after receiving information from locals, rescued her on the afternoon of the next day, November 18, and after providing her with primary treatment, admitted her to Lakshmipur Sadar Hospital. The abused woman is the daughter of a poor farmer from Char Kalkini village in Kamalnagar upazila.
The relatives alleged that the woman was married to Abul Kalam 10 years ago. Since the marriage, Kalam has taken dowry several times on various pretexts. After that, he started demanding more dowry. Last year, he pressured her for a dowry of 50,000 taka. He started torturing his wife when she did not give him the money.
"Seeing no other way, Kalam's wife divorced him through the court six months ago. As a result, Kalam, along with three other friends, took his divorced wife away, cut her hair, tortured her, beat her and gang-raped her," said the relatives.
The day after the incident, on November 18, the mother of the abused woman filed a case with the police station. The accused in the case, Md. Bablu, son of Md. Siraj Mia, a resident of Torabganj area, and a friend of her ex-husband, was arrested by the police that night.
