International Crimes Tribunal Chief Prosecutor Golam Arif Tipu is no more

Language soldier, freedom fighter and Chief Prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal (Attorney General rank) lawyer Golam Arif Tipu has passed away. He breathed his last at 8:20 am today, Friday, at the capital's LabAid Hospital while undergoing treatment (Inna Lillahi wa Inna Ilaihi Rajiun). He was 93 years old. He had been suffering from old age-related physical complications for a long time. He is survived by relatives and many appreciative people.

Golam Arif served as the Chief Prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal, established to try crimes against humanity during the Great Liberation War of 1971, from 2010.

Acting Chief Prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal, Lawyer Syed Haider Ali, confirmed the death of Golam Arif to Prothom Alo. He said that Golam Arif was admitted to LabAid Hospital last Thursday in a serious condition.

Syed Haider Ali expressed deep sorrow over the death of Golam Arif, prayed for the forgiveness of the departed soul, and expressed condolences to the bereaved family. He also said that his burial place will be decided after discussions with the family.

Golam Arif was born on August 28, 1931, in Kamalakantapur village of Shibganj upazila of Chapainawabganj. His father Aftab Uddin Ahmed was a district registrar. He was the second of 9 siblings. Golam Arif earned a master's degree from Dhaka University. He was active in left-wing politics since his student days. From 1954 to 1956, he was the general secretary of Bangladesh Chhatra Union. He was a lawyer, a brave freedom fighter and a language movement activist. He played a special role in the great mother language movement. Under his leadership, the state language movement was held in Rajshahi in 1952. Under his leadership, the first Shaheed Minar was built at Rajshahi College. In 2019, he was awarded the Rashtriya Ekushey Padak for his contribution to the language movement.

Golam Arif started his career as a lawyer in 1958. He became known as the defense lawyer in one of the most talked about Nihar Banu murder cases in Bangladesh. He was elected as the president of Rajshahi Bar Association, a member of Rajshahi University Senate and Syndicate, and a member of Bangladesh Bar Council several times.
